Let your yard speak for itself.

5 tips on adding character to enhance your property – and showcase your unique style.

You put a lot of thought into which trees and shrubs would spruce up your yard – a foxtail palm here, a croton Petra there. You know how you want your property to look.

So let it speak for you. And add some character.

Character? you say. What does character have to do with my yard?

Turns out, a whole bunch. Your property is a reflection of you. Question is, what do you want it to say?

By adding some personal touches, your yard can offer a glimpse into who you are and what you like. It all starts by asking yourself what speaks to you. These can be:

  • Ornamental structures: Pick out some pieces that bring you joy. Maybe it’s a winged angel statue. Or a birdhouse with a tiki bar and happy hour signs. Or a pink flamingo water fountain.

  • Flags: Whether they’re cheering on your favorite football team or celebrating a holiday season, install one in a spot where passers-by can spy.

  • Hobby hot spot: Introduce pieces showcasing what you love, right in your garden. Find a place to work hints of your hobby in your garden. Check out what we did with our own lawn, sporting our love for bowling. While we may still paint and add décor the pins and ball, we’re feeling it as-is for now.

  • A distinctive planter. Show off your favorite flowers, herbs, and more by planting them in a unique container. Like a birdcage, an old coffee pot, or even an old boot. We found a 100-year-old clawfoot tub online and scooped it up before painting it yellow – and turning it into the biggest planter we’ve got.

  • In memoriam: For those who have lost a loved one, think about setting aside a segment of the garden to honor their memory. Fill it with plants and décor that share more about that special person and what they meant to you.

We could go on. There are so many ways to enhance your yard with your own personal touch. Just think about what you’d love to see in your design and start kicking around ideas. The possibilities are aplenty.
